Packing Tips for a Smoother Move

Packing up an entire house takes time. From the biggest things down to the smallest object, packing right will make your move smoother and protect your belongings from damage.

Warehouse Services offers packing, storage and moving services. If you prefer a hands-on approach to preparing your belongings for a move, we have some best practices for you when you’re doing it on your own. We’ve been around the packing block a time or two and when it comes to efficient packing, we’ve narrowed it down to the following tips.

Declutter Your Closets

Everyone has closets and drawers filled with items that haven’t seen the light of day in a long time. The first step to an efficient move is to get rid of items that you haven’t used, don’t fit anymore or don’t work. Old electronics should be recycled. If they are outdated and have been replaced with something newer, there is no reason to move it with you. Clothing that no longer fits or is worn and tattered can be donated to a local charity. Freeing up space by getting rid of out of date items cuts down on your moving expenses and packing time.

Pack Early

If there is a room in your house that you know isn’t going to be used before your move, go ahead and pack it up. Guest rooms are a great example as are things like old books that you want to keep but won’t be reading anytime soon. By packing in stages, when it comes to the week before your move, you won’t be overwhelmed. The last rooms to be packed would be your everyday rooms like main bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens.

Pack it Right

Knowing how to properly pack moving boxes will reduce the number of boxes you need and protect items from damage. Heavy items get packed on the bottom first and fill the boxes in with lighter items on top. Another great way to organize your packing is to pack smaller items into smaller boxes that can then be put into a larger box so you utilize as much space as possible.

Label It!

After a few boxes are taped and ready to go you’ll quickly realize they all look the same. Take the time out of your packing to label every box. In addition to labeling what the contents are, label the box with the room the box will go to. This will help your movers know where to put boxes in your new home without you having to look at every box and tell them where to go. On that note, when you get to your new home on move-in day label each room that matches how you labeled the rooms on your boxes.

Pack an Essentials Box

When moving day comes it will be busy with a lot of moving parts. We recommend packing a day of essentials box that goes on the truck last or goes with you in the car. This box will be packed with anything you might need to get to the first day in your new home including:

●      Medications

●      phone and laptop chargers

●      paper towels

●      Soap

●      toilet paper

●      baby essentials

You might also want to consider having several small tools like screwdrivers and a hammer in close reach so you can begin reassembling anything that was taken apart to be moved.
